Anyone familiar with different varieties of honey?

I enjoy making a home-made granola cereal and I normally use regular clover-honey bought in the supermarket. However, I recently discovered that there are many different varieties of honey produced from all over the world and I’m wondering which types I should try in my cereal.

Is anyone familiar with the different types of honey and would like to recommend a particular type/brand? I’d love to hear about your favorite honey.

Thanks.

Honey varieties are directly related to the nectar source (flowers and/or trees) visited by the honeybees. The unique characteristics of the Hellenic terrain and the nomadic nature of apiculture in Greece contribute to a wide range of honey varietals. Honeybees visit more than 100 floral varieties at a time, but the honey varietals depend on the flower species whose nectar prevails over other flower species. Consequently, the specific flower blossom ascribes the flavour and name to the particular honey varietal.

All too often, honey producers mix two honey varietals, e.g. thyme honey is mixed with a small quantity of pine honey to inhibit crystallization.

Basically, there are two categories of honey: one that comes from flowers (blossom) and another that comes from the juices of trees (e.g. eucalyptus, heath, pine, etc.). The flavour, aroma and nutritional value of honey depend on the nectar source (blossoms or trees) honeybees have visited. Furthermore, the quality of honey also depends on the bee tribe, the quality of soil and the health status of bees.

COLOUR & FLAVOUR

The colour and flavour of the honey varietals depend on the nectar sources (flowers and/or trees) visited by the honeybees. In general the colour of honeys ranges from translucent, to yellow, redish, deep orange, amber, light brown and dark brown. As a rule of thumb, honeys light in colour are usually of acute aroma and taste. However, honeys darker in colour are rich in trace elements (potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, sodium) and, therefore, of high nutritional value. Approximately 320 honey varietals are available internationally.

PINE

This is darker than thyme honey. Approximately 65% of all honey produced in Greece is of the pine varietal. Owing to its low sugar concentration, this varietal is not particularly sweet but richer in trace elements, proteins and amino acids. This type of honey does not crystallize easily.

FIR

One of the best honey varietals comes from fir trees found in the regions of Euretania, Epirus, Mt. Pindos, Mt. Parnitha and Mt. Olympus. It is dark brown in colour and retains its liquid form for about two years.

CHESTNUT

This honey is of intense aroma, dark red in colour, leaving also a bitter aftertaste. It is also slow to crystallize (1-2 years).

LINDEN

It is of bright yellow colour and particular flavour. It is ideal for minor intestine ailments and good for curing insomnia attacks. This type of honey is produced in western Macedonia.

HEALTH

This type of honey is also known as “sousouri”. It is considered a product of high nutritional value and often found on the shelves of health stores. It has a particular aroma and flavour, is redish in colour while it crystallizes in 1-3 months. This type of honey is recommended for children and the aged. Beekeepers use this type of honey to feed their bees.

EUCALYPTUS

Eucalyptus honey is of mildly sweet, herbal flavour with a fruity aftertaste. It does not crystallize easily and is considered of high nutritional value.

CLOVER,”BABAKIA”, SUNFLOWER

Honey of this type is of the blossom category mentioned earlier. It is light in colour and crystallizes fairly easily. It is produced in Thrace and Macedonia (Greece).

ROSEMARY

This is considered as an aphrodisiac. It is mainly produced in the countries of the Middle East and is of the rare type.

SAGE

This honey is produced on Crete where the land is rich in sage efflorescence.
This type of honey is of excellent aroma and long-lasting flavour.

HONEY COMES IN THREE DIFFERENT FORMS:
Comb Honey The liquid is still in the honeycomb
Chunk-style Honey Includes chunks of honeycomb
Liquid Honey Does not include the honeycomb and may have been pasteurized

USE: Honey is used as a sweetener in baked goods, with teas, and in some main dish glazes.

STORAGE:Store honey in a cool, dry place. Liquid honey will keep for up to a year; comb and chunk honey stays good for six months. If you refrigerate honey, it will crystallize, but can be re-liquefied by heating it in a microwave or on a stovetop in a pan of shallow water.

FOR MORE INFO:To learn more about honey available in your area, contact a local beekeeper, honey packer, distributor or the National Honey Board.

A GUIDE TO SOME COMMON HONEYS:
Alfalfa:
Light in color; mild flavor and aroma

Basswood:
Water white color; strong, “biting” flavor

Buckwheat:
Dark brown, full-bodied

Clover:
Varies in color from water white to amber; mild taste

Eucalyptus:
Comes from a large group of plants, so it has a wide variety of colors; usually strong-flavored; Australia’s main source of honey

Orange Blossom:
Usually light in color; mild flavor and light, often citrus-like taste

Tulip Poplar:
Dark amber color with a lighter flavor than the color suggests

Tupelo:
Light in color, heavy-bodied, mild taste

Wildflower:
Comes from miscellaneous or undefined flower sources

how to calculate sample size in a case control study when we have noting before?

I have the formula specific for calculating the sample size in a case-control epidemiological study. this formula needs to know about the variance or the probability of the presence of risk factors in the population to use them in the formula. but, when we have no previous research in the field in that specific population, then we do not have the required information to use them in sample size formula. in this case how we can calculate the sample size? specifically, I want to study the risk factors of a rare disease in a retrospective case-control study.the population of those disease is about 1000 patient as the records. so, what could be the size for case and for control group?

I really don’t think this is what you are looking for, but I don’t quite understand what you are saying….so look it over, I hope it helps…if not, sorry.

Margin of Error = Critical Value * SE

You choose the margin of error based upon how confident you want to be. 95% is a good level of confidence…so your ME would be .05

The critical value comes from the ME, so for 95% it would be 1.96…..

SE is the Standard Error, which is S / square root of “N”

S is the Standard deviation for the population…I don’t know how you would calculate this without knowing anything, so estimate….

and N is the variable that represents Sample Size.

So,

.05 = 1.96 * (S/ square root of N)

Has anyone tried SoloSlim diet pills, and how did they work for you?

I started them today, and I am hoping they will work for me.
I ail from a Thyroid Disease, and Diabetes, and need to lose a lot to weight.
Will appreciate any of your knowledge about this product.

I have been through it all and know what’s it about. The main thing is to stick in there. You can’t be an addict to food and never exercise if you want to live a healthy life and keep the weight off. I’ve worked out, done every diet, and all types of classes.

Nothing works, besides dedication and intelligence towards the subject of losing weight.

First, depending on how much weight you need to lose, your diet is the first concern. You can’t eat 10,000 calories a day and expect the weight to come off, even if you are exercising a lot. Which brings us to the next thing. Duh, Exercising…

This is a must especially if you need to a lot of weight. Get at least 30 mins of some good hardcore exercising. Do some cardio, in the long run, it’s good for the heart.

However, I find the most hardest part of losing weight/keeping it off, in my diet. It’s so hard to keep your fingers out of the cookie jar or those chocolate goodies. I’ve found a great addition to help any one out, it’s a natural weight loss supplement called Proactol. Now don’t get all crazy on me and say diet pills don’t work. That is true, but not in this case. This one isn’t meant to burn pounds while you sit on the couch. It’s an appetite suppressant, along with being a fat binder. I saved money on the pills at theweightlossplace. com along with getting some good info. It basically makes those fingers not go towards the cookie jar. For me it’s the best pill I’ve tried and I’ve tried cupboards full. Now this doesn’t mean you have to follow my foot steps but I’ve successfully lost roughly 70 pounds and keeping it off til this day.

Well good luck and remember what I said, Dedicate.

how do you get rid of thigh/leg and stomach fat?

Just give a few tips or advice.

I’m in a training program at my school at this is the workout that we do in these specific areas:

To help your Stomach/Belly -

Crunches (lay down with your knees bent and just sit up enough for your shoulders to get off the ground)

Sit-ups (lay down wih you knees bent and sit up to your knees, your back should be completely off the ground)

Crossovers (sit on ur butt with your legs up and twist side to side)

Small suit-cases (lay flat then bring up your knees and your body and lay flat again, repeat)

Large suit-cases (Same thing as small suit-cases except you bring up your whole leg)

To help your Legs/Thighs -

Running (The best and easiest way to help your legs )

Walking

Jogging

Leg Press (Go to a gym and theres usually a leg press machine where you laydown and put lots of weight on the machine and just push the weight with your legs)

Squats (This is great for legs, thighs and your shoulder too, go to a gym and find a Squat Machine, put weight on both sides and squat down then back up and repeat)

All this has really turned my life around, i used to not be athletic at all i used to be on the computer all the time, now i play football and lacrosse at my school and i feel great

Having someone work out with you is probably a good idea because you can keep pushing each other to reach that extra mile, and if you decide to use the Squat Machine BE SURE YOU HAVE SOMEBODY SPOTTING YOU!!

Good Luck and don’t give up!!

How long do diet shakes take with replacing 1 meal a day to start losing and noticing changes?

If i was to replace 1 meal a day, say lunch, for a shake, how long would it take for me to lose weight? And also i want to go on a diet, im really good with exercise, i exercise everyday but im a very fussy eater therefor i don’t like much. How am i supposed to eat healthy then if i don’t like the diet foods advertisers tell you to eat?

Some diet shakes are real garbage drinks. They often contain cheap ingredients such as casein (milk protein) or aspartame (a neurotoxin). Counting and reducing calorie intake has been proven to be ineffective over a two year period of time in one scientific study after another. The most popular diets fail time after a period of two years without fail. Most participants end up putting on more weight than they lose.

The only effective way to lose weight in the long run is to change your lifestyle. If you can maintain a low-fat vegan diet you have a chance at permanent weight loss. It also helps to maintain an aerobic exercise program and a free weight exercise training program.

You see, it takes 7 times as many calories to add a pound of muscle than it does a pound of fat. Would you rather gain 7 pounds of fat or 1 pound of sculpting muscle? The muscles cells also burn calories, even when you are resting.
